Whilst this may be questionable behaviour by dovecot I resolved it by
simple ensuring that ntpd and therefore the initial system clock update
which may be large happens before dovecot is started by fixing the init
script order.

The dovecot wiki[0] says this is fixed in version 2, so I'm guessing
Lenny is still using version 1. Might be worth looking into any
backports if they are available.
