As we're potentially about to get a new
government it's all a bit up
in the air, but I'm working with some UK ISP industry groups to get
answers to these questions. I will have more info for you as soon as
I can.
Just to keep you up to date, I attended the UK Network Operators'
Forum meeting yesterday and saw a presentation on the DEA by Andrew
Cormack, a legal type person at JANET. The slides are here:
I've known Andrew Cormack for many years. Sadly, we don't seem to
end up at the same kinds of conference together any more, so I haven't
seen him in a while, but he's very good at this kind of thing. When I
first met him, he was part of the JANet-CERT team. He has a lot of
experience in legal issues relating to IT, and is frequently involved
in discussions with government, the police, and the CPS about the
practical interpretation and application of laws impinging on the IT
area.
While re-iterating Andy's observation that it's not legal advice, I
would take what Andrew says as a very strong indicator of the way that
things will eventually happen.
