Thanks, I hadn't seen this used before. I see that it "enables
output about the decisions made by dist-upgrade, upgrade, install,
remove, purge." What particularly does it do that eases the
installation of amd64 packages when you are starting with i386 ones?

Is it mainly so that when apt says it wants to remove a large amount
of essential packages you can see why it thinks it needs to do that?
