Magento seems to be the gold standard for shopping carts, however I
find the implementation a bit scary.

Isn't there such things as a statically built shopping site that does
all shopping cart stuff via Javascript nowadays?

I thought Etsy did this "my way", but when looking at the resources
tab in Chrome dev tools, I can't find evidence of this.
