Hi guys,
I seem to be having some issues with getting postfix installed on my VPS, I
have been to the Ubuntu forums, the mailing list and IRC just now.
The problem is laid out here: http://pastebin.com/umgcf0iM
dpkg seems to be having problems, here is what the people on IRC suggested,
all of which worked to no avail:
-Change to official repos (rather than the bitfolk ones)
-apt-get remove postfix, apt-get clean, apt-get update, apt-get install
postfix (All of which worked to no avail)
-df -h - showed 78% full, 1.6GB left
And finally:
$ dpkg --contents /var/cache/apt/archives/postfix_2.7.0-1_i386.deb
dpkg-deb: failed to read archive
`/var/cache/apt/archives/postfix_2.7.0-1_i386.deb': No such file or
directory
So, I'm out of ideas :S ...whats going wrong?

It's not, it's just warning you of problems - dpkg is working fine ;)

That's pointless and costs you bandwidth (imho).
-apt-get remove postfix, apt-get clean, apt-get
update, apt-get
install postfix (All of which worked to no avail)
You probably wanted to "apt-get purge postfix" as that first step, as it
sounds like you're missing files which postfix is expecting. Try a purge
and then an install (clean and update are a bit beside the point).
And finally:
$ dpkg --contents /var/cache/apt/archives/postfix_2.7.0-1_i386.deb
dpkg-deb: failed to read archive
`/var/cache/apt/archives/postfix_2.7.0-1_i386.deb': No such file or
directory
That obviously fails because the deb doesn't exist. I'm not sure why
that command would be particularly insightful with your problem tho.

its init script.
"update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/postfix: file does not exist"
Could it be that you have previously manually deleted
/etc/init.d/postfix which is marked as a config file, so dpkg
assumes you really meant to do that and doesn't replace it when you
reinstall the package?
If so, try purging the postfix package first (so dpkg forgets all
about it) and then installing it again.

There are no bitfolk repos, apt-cacher is just a caching proxy to
whichever official repo you choose to use. Having said that,
removing apt-cacher from the equation at least does rule out some
problem there.

postfix (All of which worked to no avail)
None of those would allow the reinstallation of /etc/init.d/postfix
in the situation described above, so that fits.
And finally:
$ dpkg --contents /var/cache/apt/archives/postfix_2.7.0-1_i386.deb

`/var/cache/apt/archives/postfix_2.7.0-1_i386.deb': No such file or
directory
Just suggests that file does not exist,,

Thank you for your help, I attempted to do a purge as you suggested,
however:
dpkg: error processing postfix (--purge):
subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 100
Then i tried: sudo dpkg --force-all --purge postfix
and got the same problem...
I remember trying to install postfix a while ago and might have made a mess
of it, I believe it was one of the times apache2 went out of control because
of WP and crashed the server so it never completed the installation.

I managed to cheat dpkg slightly, i created a new file called postfix with a
hunch that it would go past the error and complete. It did and now I have
postfix installed and working :)

It's likely complaining about the missing init file. Do "sudo
touch /etc/init.d/postfix" to create the file (which will be empty, but
we don't care because you're creating it so that it can be removed
successfully).
If there are other problems with the package, you might want to do 'dpkg
-L postfix' to get a list of the files that it's looking for, and see if
they're all there or if other bits have been nuked. If they have, you
might want to create those as well - essentially, the error you're
getting is the pre-removal script encountering errors, which almost
certainly means it's expecting a file to exist which has been manually
removed.
dpkg experts might be able to point out an equivalent to "rpm --verify";
last time I looked it had no such feature though (sadly, and bizarrely).
