I can see the reasons for not using Twitter any more rather better than I can see why you ever used it at all.

If it is only really there to provide a status and announcement page that works if your systems have a major failure, why not just have a hosted blog page? We simply have a blog page on blogspot.

I don't think this is the case because with Twitter, your access to
everything that is on Twitter relies upon your relationship with the
operators of Twitter. Whereas with Fediverse, you can end your
relationship with the operators of an instance, move to a different
instance, and still retain communication with everyone that you
communicated with before.

As I say, for what the BitFolk Twitter account is used for, it is
overkill to run our own instance. In terms of getting along with the
operators of a Fediverse instance, if a mainstream or like-minded
instance is chosen then I don't think that would be an issue and it
would just come down to their ability to keep it running. If we're
not happy we will just move it elsewhere.

If we get repeatedly burned then we will revisit the idea of running
our own instance. A nice thing is that any actual followers should
persist through those moves without really noticing.

It is my view that continuing to use Twitter does endorse the views
of the operators of Twitter. The operators of Twitter think so too
because they are using usage metrics to defend their decisions.
That's why (I and) BitFolk won't use it any more. Other people will
have different views but I'm only telling you all what BitFolk is
doing and why.

I've already made the decision that BitFolk won't be using Twitter
any more.

(Although the Fedi account doesn't exist yet and the Twitter one
still does, so if there were an emergency right now I'd have to
post about it on Twitter.)

This thread wasn't intended to be about trying to convince you all to
use any particular form of social media, it was just a notification
that the BitFolk thing that was at Twitter will soon be at
Fediverse, and seeking to know which instances people are already
on.

We have diverged somewhat into the pros and cons of Fediverse, and
what other social networks BitFolk has a presence on, or should have
a presence on. I hope I've made clear that none of those things will
really be happening without help, but with help most of them can be
up for consideration with only a few exceptions.

Simple status page is likely to be the next thing tackled after
Twitter→Fedi.

Cheers,
Andy
